"Devolved" was initially formed in late 1996 by Brett Noordin and John Sankey, who as friends had a common interest in extreme music. Soon after Joel Graham and Mark Walpole joined the duo and the songwriting process began. As a four piece "Devolved" played a number of shows in their local area of the Gold Coast, Australia, as well as recording demo tracks to increase already growing recognition.

It wasn't until 1998 that Nik Carpenter joined the band as full time vocalist. Very few live performances followed as "Devolved" stayed behind closed doors to concentrate on writing material for a debut release. In 1999, a two track demo was recorded which quickly became the most sought after item amongst the Australian underground metal community. The two songs, "Fallen Cities" and "Aversive Control" also began featuring regularly on Australia's leading radio program Triple J, and various other radio stations. The songs also gained the band interest from high profile international record labels.

In April 2000, the five members of Devolved began recording sessions for their debut release. It would take the next six months in Brisbane's "Modern Music Studios" for the ten track recording to be completed. It was also during this time that Brett Noordin and John Sankey finished the lyrical content of each track and revealed the overall theme which was to be portrayed throughout the album.

In November, 2000, "Devolved" emerged from the studio with an album that only be described as crushingly heavy and severely erratic. Titled "Technologies" this is like no other sound the music scene has produced. The album has been voted the #1 Australian metal release on triple j, a vote compiled by both triple j presenters and the listening public. "Devolved" won both categories. The strength of These qualifications led to more overseas offers being made, which gave "Devolved" the opportunity to have the album licensed and distributed across the U.K. , Europe, Japan, and of course Australia.

After replacing Joel Graham with Wayde Dunn to take over on bass duties "Devolved" returned to the studio to work on their follow up release which came in the form of an e.p. titled "Automation 001" (1st in a series of three e.p. s) All reviews of the e.p. have confirmed "Devolved" to be a serious force within the Australian and world metal/ music industries. "Devolved" are now considered to be the international torch barer's for Australian metal.
