In a show business career spanning more than 30 years Jon English has done almost everything: rock music; theatre; musicals; television sitcoms; writing, producing and directing.
For the past three months, he's been on tour with his band, playing his hits from the early '70s to the present and covering tens of thousands of kilometres, all by car.
He's won a swag of awards: including an ARIA; a Countdown award for Best Male Vocalist and a Logie for Best Actor in the mini-series Against the Wind, (for which he wrote the theme song Six Ribbons). With Simon Gallaher, he's appeared in hilarious productions of The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado and HMS Pinafore.
His breakthrough came as Judas in the 1971 Australian premiere of Jesus Christ Superstar, opposite Marcia Hines's Mary Magdalene and Trevor White's Jesus.
English's success in music theatre has continued with roles in Big River, Rasputin and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. There have been comic cameos in stage productions of Noises Off, Are You Being Served and, more recently, Dad's Army.
His rock opera Paris, about the Trojan Wars, represented a entirely new venture for English - but then, you can never tell what this star performer is likely to come up with next! |
