For the past year and a half, One Dollar Short as a collective have been on a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows. A tour of Japan in early 2003 capped off a massive 2 years for us, which saw us tour the nation several times, release our debut album and play to a packed Hordern Pavillion in Sydney at the Livid Festival. These great times came at a price. We were burnt out. We hadn't written new songs for months, we didn't want to continue touring and our Bass player and the Aussie ambassador for the band was calling it quits and moving to greener pastures (we thought Penrith was pretty green).
A year and a half later and things are looking like they used to. Adam is back in the band (after some time in the sun on the Gold Coast), we have a new permanent guitarist Dan, (who has been playing live with us for about 2 years), we have just finished recording our second full length album and we recently destroyed a house making the film clip for our first single, 'Some Assembly Required'. What more could we want? Guy Sebastian fame would be nice, but hey...
Our second full length album which is titled Receiving Transmission was written in early 2004 and honed by producer Phillip McKellar, who incidentally has recorded some amazing records, including Grinspoon's New Detention (that's the one that sealed the deal for us Phil). We recorded it in Sydney's Megaphon Studio, then moved to our own studio on the Central Coast to finish up some guitars. The vocals proved to be more of a challenge. In the midst of recording at Milk Bar studios, the place was closed down and went into receivership. Mental note: don't try and go into a studio that has an armed security guard telling you "you cant go in there anymore". So the vocals moved back to Megaphon, then to Mangrove studios then finally back to Trent's parents lounge room. End result: the vocals are finished, the album is mixed and sounds unreal.
So what is next?
Well if it was up to me the plan would go something like this;
Some Assembly Required goes to radio
Radio stations fall in love with song
Band get sick of hearing song on radio
Cash in hefty royalty cheque
Develop expensive hobbies.....
Realistically, the band will be touring forever and continuing this process of writing, recording and enjoying the results! |
