DVA at Geraldton Cathedral |
 |
Geraldton
could be called the Capital of the mid west
Western Australia and is located about 450
km north of Perth on Champion Bay - a spectacular
stretch of coastline known as the Batavia Coast.
First settled in 1850 Geraldton is a port city with
a diverse industry base from a world leading rock
lobster fishery to agriculture and gold production.
In the heart of the city you cant miss the
St Francis Xavier Cathedral built in 1915 this architectural
masterpiece is still one of Geraldtons most
frequented tourist attractions.
In late 2009 it became clear that a new sound reinforcement
system was needed, so the call was made to Darryl
Ingvarson from Mid West Sound and Lighting. Darryl
whod purchased a DB Technologies DVA system
earlier in the year recommended a line array system
for use in the church. There is a very large
dome with in the structure and this can create lots
of problems with reflections states Darryl.
We needed a wide horizontal dispersion and
narrow vertical dispersion. There is a huge dome
in the middle and with your standard point and shot
box a lot of energy is getting lost up there, so
line array technology was the way to go, he
says. Darryl also had to deal with the aesthetics
of the building as it is old and has a huge number
of tourists pass through every year. The system
also had to be very unobtrusive so the fact that
the DVA is a small box and also available in white
made the choice even easier, adds Darryl.
So, if you are ever in Geraldton, the Cathedral
is open for walk-throughs from 10am Monday, Wednesday
and Fridays. |

Opera Digital series! |
CMI Music & Audio
is now seeing the first shipments of all-new dB
Technologies OPERA DIGITAL series, a line of systems
boasting many features unprecedented in their price
range.
These new models feature ultra efficient Digipro®
digital power amps, which are engineered to deliver
higher performance in a lighter package with a smaller
footprint.
Whats more, all power amps sport two separate,
dedicated channels for the woofer and tweeter as
well as an active crossover. This design ensures
far more accurate and authentic midrange response.
Also, Opera Digital systems pump out even more power.
At 400 watts RMS, the improved 400 series models
output is 33% higher, while the brand new 600 series
models deliver 600 watts RMS. All this adds up to
greater sound pressure, more dynamic response and
even more powerful low-end punch.
New features include:
- Switching power supply (SMPS)
- Dual active limiter
- New high-performance transducer
- Digital Sound Processor
- Asymmetrical horn
- New rugged PP housing
- Low-Noise-Reflex-Ports
- Reduced weight

Opera-SUB18D now in stock |
|

|
The SUB 18D is
the first-choice bass bin for users seeking powerful
punch and ultra low-end response. Fine-tuned to
augment and amplify the high-power 18 woofers
audio performance, this custom-engineered band-pass
enclosure outperforms conventional bass-reflex
designs, achieving higher peak levels.
A single SUB 18D, paired with, say, two Opera
Live 402/405 cabinets, constitutes an extremely
efficient and flexible satellite system for entertainers
and DJs. Even a configuration as lean as this
meets high expectations for bass response. Channels
routed into the top panel make it easy to stack
units and set up larger PA systems, for example,
in combination with Flexsys F212 mid-/high-range
units. The SUB 18D cabinet leaves small footprint
that belies its high performance. And its low
weight comes courtesy of the integrated ultra
light digipro® digital power amp and
it comes as a very pleasant surprise. Equipped
with optional 100 mm casters, the unit is easy
to transport.

As you drive through
the back blocks of the Melbournes industrial
western suburbs, the last thing that you expect
to find is one of Australias largest pro Audio
dealers. Entertainment Warehouse has been operating
in Tottenham for over 20 years. With hundreds of
thousands of dollars of pro audio and lighting gear
actually in stock.
Among the hoard of gear you can see and hear the
latest Digital desks from Yamaha, latest from dB
Technologies, DBX, Wharfedale, Peavey (SH), Newmark,
AKG and lots and lots more. This truly a one stop
shop.
With a desire to expand into top end gear such as
digital consoles and line arrays, Entertainment
Warehouse has opted to stock a DB Technologies system
on the floor. As more and more audio companies around
the country are embracing line array technology,
Entertainment Warehouse see the advantage of stocking
such an item in their show room. We can now
cater for large installs and production companies
says Managing Director, Sam Christou. We are
able to supply everything from a large scale concert
system with a digital console, to a small speaker
on a stick. I can see the DVA being a huge success
for us because the price is fantastic. I can offer
Line Array technology at a very affordable rate,
continues Sam.
Right next door is Entertainment Warehouses
sister company Entertainment Warehouse Hires which
stocks Australias largest DVA system with
over 30 T4 cabinets and a bunch of S20 subwoofers.
With Joe (Entertainment Warehouse Hires
MD) having the DVA in hire next door it makes it
very easy for us to demo the system on site as well,
says Sam. |

Systems PA Hire fly DVA with large Qantas bird |

|
The owners of Small Systems
Productions Aust (SSPA) have been in the professional
audio visual industry for over 30 years. From
its origins as a hire company for professional
performers, Small Systems has grown into a diverse
business. Their services now include installations,
rentals, service and sales to a wide range of
professional, commercial and domestic clients.
Small Systems PA Hire had their DVA system find
a home in a Qantas hanger at Sydney Airport for
two monumental events in September. The first
one being the home-coming ceremony for the Australian
Olympic Team (pictured with Kevin Rudd); and the
other being the delivery of Qantass first
Airbus A380 the largest airliner in the world.
I found the system worked perfectly in that
environment, says Chris Clough, Small Systems
Managing Director.
Using sixteen DVA T4 cabinets as well as two S20
subwoofers with the DRL system lifters, Small
Systems managed to get the result they were after.
According to Chris, The coverage we got
from the system was great. The vocals were nice
and clear.
With Channel 7s Sunrise Show and the Today
Show both broadcasting from the hanger, the media
splitter was quite complex. Small Systems had
to provide 36 separate media feeds to accommodate
everyone on top of their standard left and right.
Everyone was very happy the whole gig went
off with out a hitch, says Chris.
Small Systems started to build their DVA system
earlier this year and have plans of expanding
to a full 32 T4 system which will give them 16
elements a side, plus a bunch of S20 subwoofers.

Two 3... dB! |
|
The Gold Coast is renowned for
its cafés and bars and Broadbeach offers a number
of these. Gold Coast based audio visual company, Blue
Shadow Group, is a very active HK Audio partner and
has recently started a new installation division where
by all accounts things are moving along
quite nicely with the company recently finishing an
installation at a new Mediterranean café known
as 1 Two 3 in Broadbeach.
The speakers of choice were the dB Technologies K162.
These are fantastic for this sort of application
the coverage they give is a close to as perfect
you could get, says Daniel De Vries, managing
director of Blue Shadow. The customer loves the
sound and the fact that when they get busy at night
the system can be turned right up without distorting.
Blue Shadow are proud to have a very high class showcase
at 1 Two 3 jobs of this profile inevitably lead
to more jobs as time goes by.
So, if you are up on the Gold Coast feeling the need
for some Mediterranean food and Audio (as the DBs are
Italian), drop into 1 Two 3 and enjoy.

| DVA
Spreads its Wings |
Ever
since the release of the DB Technologies DVA (Digital
Vertical Array) System on the Australian Market its popularity
has just continued to increase. With systems up and down
the East Coast has lead to a very healthy cross hire network
is in place.
In Melbourne Entertainment Warehouse has taken the reins
and has over 40 Cabinets in stock doing gigs as large
as the Rochford Winery and as small as a School disco.
In Sydney 3 companies have purchased DVA systems since
its inception. The largest DVA system in NSW is owned
by Small Systems in Peakhurst Managing Director Chris
Clough who is some what of veteran in the industry says
"I love this system, I have never heard better more
efficient bottom end and the thing I love most is that
this actually works as a true Line Source Array"
Chris has 14 Cabinets so far and has big plans for the
Future "Once I sell off some of my older inventory
I will be building my DVA stock I want to be able to do
16 T4's a side" he continues. Another user in NSW
but based in the Western Suburbs of Sydney is Andrew Robinson
of Andrews PA Hire. Andrew also an industry veteran and
currently the Front of House Engineer for Mental as Anything
has Purchased 8 x T4 cabinets with 2 x S-20 Subwoofers.
"The price point of this PA was such good value for
money" states Andrew.
Up in the state of Queensland is the Guitar Exchange an
MI Store based in the Sunshine Coast. With strong local
ties to Council and local musician's the guys from the
Guitar Exchange made the decision to start a small rental
department and the choice of PA was the DVA. The fact
that they do a large amount of outdoor shows a Line Array
was the way to go and the DVA is a good investment as
it is cost effective and works very well.
The DVA consists of T4 Cabinets and S-20 Subwoofers. The
T4's are packing 1 x 8" RCF Neo Woofer 1 x 6.5"
RCF horn loaded Neo Midrange driver and 2 x RCF Neo Compression
Driver. The S-20's contain 2 x RCF 18" Neo Woofer
with a 4" Voice Coil.

Grazing 2008 |
 As
the Crew from Entertainment Warehouse Hires rolled into
Rochford Winery in the early hours of the morning we
knew we were in for a huge weekend of fun, sun and one
hell of a show.
The first day saw us load in and set up the rig in 35-degree
heat. But, once it was all in place, it made it all
worth while. Sixteen HK CDR208 T Cohedra Line Array
cabinets as front of house, complemented by an additional
16 DVA T4 Line Array cabinets as out fill and all finished
off with 32 subs this system was set to pack a real
punch.
On stage was just as impressive with eight HK CT112
Monitors and a Double 18" sub with Double 15 and
horn on top. All performers couldn't have asked for
any more.
As day one got under way, crowds of just over 5500 people
were drawn to the winery expecting the best and they
got it. The sound was huge, crisp and crystal clear.
Plastique (Australian Retro Cover band) took to the
stage and impressed the hell out of the crowd. Following
them was a set by DJ Brad Sassman and his crew of percussionists,
vocalists and sax player. At the end of the day the
crowd was wrapped and promised to be back for a second
day of fun and wine
or maybe it was the other
way around. But I knew that there were still plenty
of 'lollies' left in the sound system to make day two
even better.
Day Two came around and the sun came out to give us
a beautiful 34-degree sunny day. Plastique came on early
and got the crowd going again for their first set. But
it was during their second set the crowd, the band and
more importantly the HK and
DVA duo came alive. Just under 8000 people rolled through
the vineyard that day and all left very impressed. I
told our head sound tech, DaveTimson, not to hold back
and when he opened-up the system, I was truly impressed
and I'm sure there were about 8000 other people who
felt the same way.
At the end of the day everyone was happy. Plastique
were impressed with the monitors and DJ Brad Sassman
said he had never played through such a huge system.
It was the first time we have ever run the HK Cohedra
and DVA systems in the same show but the two systems
made for an impressive sound and equally an impressive
show.
Special thanks must go to the crew at CMI for their
hard work in the lead up to Grape Grazing 2008, helping
to prepare the systems and special mention to all my
crew at EW Hires for a smashing job on all 3 days of
the event.

2008: The Entertainment Technology Exhibition & Conference |
 |
|
Australia's Bi-Annual trade show displaying
the latest in Pro Audio, Hi-Tech, Lighting, Broadcast,
AV equipment, Systems and Services took place at the
Sydney Convention Centre, Darling Harbor on February
11th-13th. Present at this year's show were Christian
Stump from HK AUDIO Germany; CEO/Company Director, Peter
Trojkovic; Sales and Marketing Director: Graeme Mitchell;
Pro Audio Products Manager: Andy McIntyre and NSW Account
Manager, Nathan Brady.
Although the show's official opening was Monday 11th,
the proceedings started for us on Sunday the 10th with
the set up. This year's set up saw CMI company directors
Peter Trojkovic and Graeme Mitchell proclaiming ENTECH
08 as 'best trade show ever' after the 1.30 pm set up
completion. The gallant cheering and mutual admiration
was carried on until the end of an extended lunch/dinner
at the frequented Italian restaurant on Darling Harbour.
Seafood platter and chardonnay anyone?
The night was capped off with an interesting 'behind
the mixing console' view of the IRON MAIDEN show here
in Sydney
as a part of their world tour. Thanks to Christian Stump
for organising the passes. These passes came courtesy
of Maiden Drummer Nicko McBrain's endorsement of HK
Audio Contour monitoring systems. For more info check
out www.hkaudio.com. The night was very Spinal Tap indeed,
complete with pyrotechnics,12-foot Eddie walking the
stage and hoards of fans displaying the metal salute
in Maiden T-shirts. The 'number of the beast' featured
heavily
At the previous ENTECH, CMI had flown up every speaker
box in our arsenal for display and demo. This year proved
markedly different as we simplified our stand by way
of several plinths each displaying a different cross
range of our products relevant to the show: The HK COHEDRA
Line Array, HK Contour, HK COMPACT COHEDRA Line Array,
DB-OPERA 405, DB DVA Line Array, WHARFEDALE TWIN and
the new WHARFEDALE TITAN 8'. Also on display was the
much talked about BELKIN Tune-Studio (pictured left).
What was different this year? Each box had either a
section cut away or a clear perspex side revealing the
inner workings of each box. The stand also included
a couple of plasmas with slide shows highlighting CMI
and its customer partnerships - specifically in Line
Array transactions. These images showcased approximately
25 AV customers who have purchased Line Array systems
from CMI in the last 12 months, showcasing what has
been a very successful year for CMI in audio sales across
the board.
The week at ENTECH was topped off by a number of highlights/lowlights:
o Watching 'OS' delegates from a certain other corporate
brand boldly eyeballing our Wharfedale range (market
share anyone?) and taking copies of the highly successful
Brand Detective catalogue
o Watching the internal politics of a certain wholesaler
unfold before our eyes
o A retailer reminding his previous rep of his dissatisfaction
with a deal done some time ago, resulting in aisle-way
brawl
o The seedy underbelly of deals done during the night
time hours at the bar
o Christian Stump of HK Audio saving himself from an
encounter with a man fresh out of incarceration with
his IRON MAIDEN back stage pass...
One great thing that came from the show was the huge
increase of interest we received in both the HK Line
Arrays and the dB DVA. Since the show we have completely
sold out of DVA stock and the next shipment is selling
fast, so get your orders in. The HK Audio Contour Array
also continues to be very popular with the AV Companies,
with even more coming on board over the next few months.
(The latest to jump aboard was WWAVE in North Melbourne.
See story at right...)
ENTECH has proven to be a show with a focus on relationship
building and reiterating our commitment to our dealer
base. This year's clear focus of growth for CMI will
be high end installation sound with some key leads and
inroads being developed at the show. As for retail based
product there was a definite buzz on the newly landed
Belkin Tune-Studio - in addition to the ever-growing
strength in our well established brands. .
