| A
Day at the Beach with HK Audio |
Bondi Beach proved
an idyllic playground for the Boost Mobile Surfsho.
The first international surfing competition to
take place on Bondi Beach in over 20 years, the
three-day eventheld over 12, 13 & 14
Marchsaw the most exciting aerial surfers
from across the globe compete for a $30,000 prize
on Bondis famous waves. 30,000 spectators
watched in sunny conditions and soaked up the
festival atmosphere and BE Productions were there
to provide all the audio requirements on site
for the contest arena as well as the Live music
stage in the afternoon.
BE Productions Marc McAvoy was on hand to
control all staging, set up and operation with
the following systems:
Contest area: An 8-over-4 HK Cohedra compact
system powered by HK amps and processors. HK 112s
were employed to fill areas in up to five individually
controlled zones.
Main stage:
System comprised of 16 Cohedra mid-highs over
16 Cohedra Subs with HK
power amps and processing. The monitor duty was
given to the HK112s.
Additionally, feeds were supplied for a live webcast
and live crosses to Fuel TV.
Event spokesperson and former pro-surfer, John
Shimooka, commented: Surfings finally
back at Bondi Beach after a twenty-year hiatus.
This weekend, Bondi witnessed some of the biggest
moves performed by some of the worlds best
surfers and, judging from the crowd, they enjoyed
every minute of it. We cant wait to bring
the event here again next year.
Well done to BE Productions and HK Audio, who
willwe are surebe back next year to

| Victory
Church & HK Audio - a marriage made in heaven |
One of South
Australias largest church communitiesVictory
Churchmoved to a new facility in Pooraka
in mid-2009. A centrally-located, refurbished
warehouse was chosen to cope with the demands
of an ever-expanding congregation and as
often happens with non purpose-built facilities
it came with a significant number of hurdles
at every phase of the refurbishment.
The building came with a variety of acoustic issues,
including echo and reverberation. The space is
long and wide and had a number of sight-line issues.
Intelligibility was a priority for the sound system
performance and a number of listening tests were
conducted by different loudspeaker manufacturers:
We talked to a large number of companies
and installers it wasnt a decision
we made lightly. After listening to some systems
it was clear to us that the HK Audio Cohedra system
was the way to go; not just because of its sound
but also the support and professionalism from
CMI, says Ben Ottens, Victory Churchs
production manager.
CMI Music & Audio, along with audio consultant
Angelo Tullio from High End Audio Research, came
together to design and install a high-end HK Audio
Line Array System. Extensive acoustic treatment
was carried out with a systematic approach to
loudspeaker location and design so that all requirements
were met. The HK Design not only meets, but exceeds
the required sound pressure levels with even coverage
and tonal balance from the front of stage to the
rear walls. The system sounds fantastic
it has been a great result for all the hard work
put into it, says Angelo.
With the Victory Church growing rapidly, it wont
be long before an even bigger venue is required
a problem that Ben Ottens feels the HK
system can accommodate: One of the great
things I love about this system is that, down
the track when the church grows even larger, we
can just add more boxes to grow the PA.

| Laruche:
Decadence never sounded so good... |
The
Venue
Laruche is a piece of art created by Elie Moubarak.
His love affair with the arts has driven this project
from inception three years ago to today. Inspiration,
collaboration and imagination, combined with engineering
his area of study in another life have
created this venue which swings wildly between the beautiful,
the macabre and the decadent. The venue spans two levels
and is drenched in an eclectic take on contemporary
Belle Epoque.
The Challenge
Laruche was envisioned to be a place fuelled by escapism
a bar and supper club where the artistic, the
astute and the adventurous could leave the day-to-day
behind and indulge in liquid and epicurean delights
and a place where one can become fully immersed in such
a dynamic space.
The Solution
Notable artists and creative talent have developed this
project into a distinct range of designs. Laruches
audio system was designed and installed by Brad Parker
of Parker-Black Pro Audio with support from CMI Music
& Audio. Brad decided upon a complete high-end HK
Audio system. Laruches entertainment coordinator,
sound guy and DJ, Miro Grgic, is thrilled with the HK
Audio system: The owners and myself chose HK Audio,
firstly for its sound quality, and secondly because
of the great service that Brad at Parker-Black Pro Audio
provides. For our cocktail lounge club, this was the
ideal system. Unlike some other A-class sound systems,
HK Audio is very well priced for the quality it provides.
We are in our fifth week and I am very happy with the
equipment, he says. |

Audio (With MC2 & DB Technologies) in The Regent
Plaza Ballroom |
 |
 |
 |
Located below Melbournes
famous Regent Theatre you will find the heritage-listed
Plaza Ballroom - a multi function venue which
is perfect for grand gala dinners, cocktail receptions,
weddings or AGMs. It is also the host of some
less formal events such as breakfast seminars,
luncheons, conferences and trade shows. Owned
by the Marriner Theatres Group, the Plaza Ballroom
is, without doubt, one of the most spectacular
function rooms in the country.
The theatre was built in 1929 and became a landmark
for Melbournians, despite a devastating fire in
1945 which, remarkably, left the Plaza Ballroom
intact. The theatre was re-built and continued
operating until the early 70s by which time TV
had become the preferred entertainment medium
and such old grand theatres were no longer viable.
Consequently, the theatre lay dormant for many
years.
In 1990 David Marriner approached the Melbourne
City Council to restore and refurbish the venue.
The restoration commenced in 1993 and 3 years
later both the theatre and the ballroom rooms
were restored to their former glory.
Mark Allen, technical director of all Marriner
Theatres, made the decision this year to upgrade
the audio system in the Plaza Ballroom. After
talking to a number of sound engineers and venue
operators, they made the decision to use HK Audio.
We had a lot of problems because the stage
of the Ballroom is directly under the Regents
orchestra pit. When we had a band on downstairs,
the bottom end would travel upstairs and this
created huge problems for us, says Mark.
CMI, along with Parker Black Pro Audio,
were brought in to help solve what was a very
complex problem. After trying different positions
with subwoofers and taking readings from around
the venue - both down stairs and in the Regent
- it became very clear that Line Array technology
was to come into play. We needed to use
a line array due to the fact we had a wide vertical
dispersion and a need to throw the sound forward,
says Brad Parker of Parker Black - the head consultant
for the project. One of the best things
was that there was very little sound coming out
from behind the front of house system which means
it wasnt travelling upstairs, he continues.
We went with the HK Audio Contour Array
set up and, to offset the low end problems, we
chose to run with three CTA-208s a side with a
CT-118. This was great because we could get the
bottom end out of the top boxes and the subs have
more than enough down really low. We ran the top
of the arrays at 4 ohms and have the bottom cabinets
running at 8 ohms which gives us the perfect 3db
drop we were after in the near field.
To run the front of house system MC2 T-3500s are
being used in-line with the HK Audio DSM-2060
controller. We went right into the DSM and
set it up especially for the job. I must say it
is an excellent controller you can do so much
with it, says Brad. We also incorporated
the dance floor fill into it and set it up so
it can be used in various configurations around
the stage area, he continues. The
T-3500s are one of the most amazing amps. I dont
think we could ever get them to clip and the sonic
capabilities make these one of the best amps on
the planet everything out the front is just flat
- and thats the way it should be.
The monitor system chosen is made up of the new
dB technologies DVX enclosures. DVX-D12s are being
used for near field and side fill with four DVX-DM12s
and four DVX-DM28 dual 8-and-horn cabinets for
stage monitoring. Due to the bottom end
problems we use in-ear monitoring when ever we
can but there is always the odd artist that must
use a wedge so the dual 8s are definitely the
way to go, says Andrea the in-house technician
for the ballroom. Powered monitors are the
way to go for us. We move them around and the
beauty of the DVXs is high power and light weight.
When we tried them out before we the install I
was blow away by how loud they go, says
Andrea. Quite often we are moving the dance
floor and near fills so this solution is just
fantastic, he continues. An added
bonus was we are able to use the existing cabling
from the speakers we replaced.
With the install up and running, Mark Allen is
very pleased with the result: It has been
a fantastic experience. The guys from both CMI
and Parker Black have been great and they have
come up with a great solution. Anywhere you walk
around the venue the audio is smooth and a pleasure
to listen too. I am rapt that they have not only
found a solution to a problem we have been having
for years, but they have also made a very easy-to-use
and great sounding system as well. |

| Beach
Cricket and HK Audio: Howzat! |
|
Once a year Australia plays host to a Tri Nationals
series with a twist. Played on Coolangatta beach over
the month of January, Australia, New Zealand and South
Africa lock horns to see who will win the XXXX Beach
Cricket Trophy.
This year, Gold Coast AV company, Blue
Shadow Group won the contract to supply the
sound system to be used at the ground. Managing Director
Daniel de Vries opted to use his
HK Audio Contour Array system. With a total
of four grandstands and the VIP area known as the
Retreat, this was a very large area to cover, so ten
Contour Array half-stacks were used to give the crowd
an even coverage. The coverage was fantastic
you could hear everything from anywhere around the
ground, says Daniel. Also on hand to oversee
the audio was one of Australias busiest production
managers Peter Pollard (pictured right) Its
great to have the dispersion of a Line Array cabinet
in this environment, says Peter.
With the Beach Cricket going live to air on Channel
10, there were a few requirements to ensure that the
live feed didnt mix with the broadcast and that
the crowd could still hear what was going on. It
is imperative to have good control over every area
of the ground as I never know where Channel 10 will
be interviewing from, continues Peter. To give
Peter the control that was required, every stack was
put on a different send which meant that large cable
runs were required. Daniel and the guys from Blue
Shadow used CMIs new Rapco Horizon Production
Cables to do the job. I must say it was very
handy having the 30 and 45 metre lengths with the
color code - it makes life very easy and the quality
of these cables is great, Daniel comments.

| Perth
goes Contour |
|

As HK Audio continues
to impress, a bunch of rental companies from Western
Australia have joined the HK Partners Network
in recent months. XDC from Bunbury, just south
of Perth, recently bought 4 CTA-208s and 4 x CTA-118
Subwoofers. XDC have been providing PA and production
equipment to Bunbury and throughout Western Australia
for the past 5 years. Prior to that, Managing
Director John Hayes ran some production out of
Perth before buying South West Sound Systems and
combining the 2 companies to create XDC Pro Audio
and Lighting. Its done a few shows
now (the Contour Array) and I have to say its
smooth-as-silk and just sounds brilliant
he says. I have never come across a PA like
it we just run it flat and it works so
well, he continues.
Also in WA, but up in the capital, Dream Catcha
Productions have joined the HK Audio family with
a substantial first purchase and a desire to expand
over the coming years. With a very high customer
service focus, the guys from Dream Catcha are
very pleased with what the system has delivered
for them. With a Passive Contour Array and a bunch
of Contour CT series monitors the directors are
finding more customers are blown away with the
system: We have used plenty of systems over
the years but this HK system has surpassed every
system we have used to date. Our customers love
the monitors and the front of house, as do we!
says Jeremy Harris Managing Director.
Corporate Concept Production (CCP) is a Western
Australian owned and operated Production Company,
specializing in Lighting Equipment, Operators,
Riggers, and technical support for events ranging
from motor car launches to large outdoor events.
They are fully equipped with the most advanced
technology in Lighting and Audio. With the recent
addition of a HK Contour Array CCP is becoming
one of Perths largest event specialists.
I dig my Contour Array you point the furry
bits forward and away you go remarks Tim
Bradsmith the managing director. It has
such a great sound and a very easy to use PA system,
he continues. |
